Bollywood

Bollywood film music has a rich and celebrated history beginning in 1931 with India's first sound film. The musical genre, then highly popular in Western cinema, became an inseparable part of the Indian film tradition. Bollywood music spanned the decades, ever evolving and mixing its own foundations in the ancient Hindustani classical school with trends and styles from a wealth of sources--from the jazzy West to Islamic religious melodies. Now an international phenomena, Bollywood film music cannot be a defined by a single characteristic, but is rather a fascinating blend of musical movements and ideas. Major pioneers include Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Asha Bhonsle, and later artists to continue the tradition are Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh, and Sonu Nigam. From the Golden Age to modern cinema, Bollywood music remains enormously popular around the globe, and promises always to be fun, surprising, and memorable.
